When it comes to eating a plant-based diet, convenience foods on the go can be sometimes tricky to find. Not Dogs has a small restaurant in the Bullring Link Street and I have to admit that I don’t visit all that often. So when I was asked to come along to sample the Not Dogs Christmas menu, I was intrigued.
The great thing about the Not Dogs ethos is that they want to become the restaurant of choice for people who are meat reducers, vegetarians and vegans. The attitude here isn’t that only vegans are welcome and I think after meeting Katie and Jane, they would be horrified if anyone was made to feel this way when coming into Not Dogs.
There are a lot of menu items that use Quorn products but there are vegan alternatives available for most of their vegetarian menu. Not Dogs is now in a place where they are able to use the best possible ingredients from a variety of brands in order to deliver satisfying meals that even a meat lover would enjoy. And I say this because my husband is still a meat eater and I have been one for most of my life, yet we both find ourselves happy with the food from Not Dogs.
I tried the vegan-friendly version of the Burger with Bells On. It is a chicken style burger with vegan mayonnaise (their own recipe) along with salad, cranberry sauce and stuffing in a soft roll. This was designed to feel like the leftover Christmas sandwich that the nation enjoys on Boxing Day. And as someone who has eaten many leftover sandwiches on Boxing Day, I have to say that they have got this right.
The other item on the Not Dogs Christmas menu is Santa’s Stilton Surprise. I had the vegan-friendly version again, which consisted of a seitan frankfurter with Christmas-spiced caramelised red onions and crumbled “Stilton”. I am not a fan of Stilton but this Not Dog was really tasty and I found myself enjoying it.
I also got to try a shake made with rice milk. This was a Christmas pudding flavour that was being tested at the time but not confirmed to be going on the menu. But today is the Not Dogs Christmas menu launch so there is only one way to find out if it made the cut and that is to head to Not Dogs for yourself. I will be returning to get myself a Burger with Bells On very soon. That is one tasty burger!
