I co-run Brum Bloggers with Laura and arrange meet-ups that can vary. We headed to the launch of the 1580 restaurant, a contemporary Indian in Erdington with the aim of having a first look at the restaurant, catch up with some of our bloggers and to tweet up a storm about the event.

Living in the city centre of Birmingham has somewhat spoilt me as I can walk to most events. It’s great for getting my FitBit steps goal and is good for my general health so I don’t mind. It does make 1580 a bit of a destination for me that requires forward planning and effort to get to due to its location. Thankfully there is some parking so it’s not terrible if you decide to drive but I went for a taxi.

The 1580 restaurant is a modest size that suits the local area and is decorated in a lovely contemporary Indian way. We all found that our tables were adequate for feasting and sharing food with each other, which is exactly what you’d want from a local curry house. I loved that we could fit in so many Brum Bloggers into one restaurant without feeling like we were really spread out or that we were sitting on top of each other.

We began with some dips and masala cone popadums. These tasted fresh and were a great way to fire up appetites whilst we chatted and started playing with camera settings to capture the meal ahead.

Due to my dietary requirements, the set menu was somewhat restrictive. There were only three dishes out of the 16 that I could eat so I asked about their regular menu. The regular menu offered me a lot more choice as a dairy-free diner, which is pleasing. For starters, I ordered Malabari Garlic Chili Tiger Prawns (£7.45), which are tiger prawns tossed in crushed peppercorn, garlic, soya, chilli, onion and pepper. These prawns were lovely as they weren’t overcooked or overspiced. Even better was how generous the portion was. I wouldn’t have needed a main if I had ordered some rice or bread to go with these prawns.

My main was a dairy-free lamb rogan josh with steamed rice. The lamb was soft, juicy and flavourful. I only needed a knife to cut one piece of lamb in this dish as the rest succumbed to a little pressure from my fork. As seems traditional, the portions of both the lamb and the rice were generous and well presented.

I didn’t order a dessert but a cursory glance around at the restaurant showed many people enjoying some gulab jamun.
